Sinusitis can be treated with medicines and some handy home methods too are useful like keeping moist heat in the face. The treatment is given for sinus infection to:
• Facilitate mucus drainage and minimize the swelling of the inner lining of the sinuses
• Get rid of pain and severe pressure
• Clear the infection
• Avoid developing scar tissue and to prevent permanent devastation of the tissue in the nose and sinuses
Medicines are usually used to get rid of sinusitis. There are various treatments for this medical condition which usually last up to 3 days or several weeks. Medicines which are used to overcome sinus infections are antibiotic for sinus infection, analgesics, mucolytics, decongestants, and corticosteroids. These medicines are given individually or combined together for better results.
Treatment for acute sinusitis
Short term or acute sinusitis last up to 4 weeks, most of the patients recover from this medical condition without the help of an antibiotic. When the sinusitis is due to viral infection it will not respond to antibiotics. So it is better to consult your health practitioner to know whether antibiotic treatment is necessary.
Most of the patients when affected by sinus infection due to bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. This type of infection responds well to antibiotics. The dosage of antibiotics depends on the intensity of the infection.
Treatment for chronic sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis will last up to 8 weeks or even longer. This condition is hard to treat and it does not respond quickly to antibiotics.
Antibiotic therapy is advisable to treat chronic sinusitis and the dosage will be prescribed for a longer period. Doctors usually try combination of the drugs to overcome this medical condition. A corticosteroid nasal spray is recommended to alleviate the inflammation and swelling caused in the lining of the nasal passages.
Sinusitis is not easy to diagnose as it shares the same symptoms of cold, fever and other viral illness especially it is hard to diagnose in children. So monitor the symptoms periodically to identify the illness and start the treatment as early as possible.
